Digital Camera Flash Tips
Flash range
When using a built-in digital camera flash, stay within the recommended near and far range for the focal length you’re using. The flash range, which is listed in the specifications for the camera, changes as the focal length is changes.
Don’t solely rely on the flash
If you’re inside taking photos during the day, open doors and curtains to let in outside, natural light to supplement the flash. Otherwise, turn on additional lights in the room. You may also have to increase the ISO number if lighting is low.
White balance
If you use a flash in a room or area where the lighting is artificial, such as incandescent or fluorescent, photos will most likely have a color cast if you stick to auto white balance mode. For more natural color, change the white balance setting to match the main source of light. Some digital cameras have Flash white balance and Custom white balance settings.
Red-eye reduction
One of the best ways to prevent red-eye when using a built-in digital camera flash is to ask a subject not to look directly at the camera when taking the shot. Turning on more lights in the room can also help reduce red-eye.
Fill-in flash
Using the flash outside is an effective method to bring out details in a subject that would otherwise be lost in shadows or when the subject is strongly back lit. Take the flash out of auto mode and manually switch the flash on to fill-flash or foced flash mode. The subject must be within the flash range for fill-flash to be effective.
